Sustainability at Hermes

At Hermes, we are proud to be members of the original green industry and embrace our responsibility as stewards of the environment. Working towards sustainability is an ongoing process of learning and discovery. We are committed to improving our methods and practices, one step at a time.

Here are some of the sustainable practices we currently employ at Hermes:

  • Integrated Pest Management (IPM) – we have developed a program that targets select pests and avoids blanket chemical applications. We treat only if the disease or pest is a health concern to the tree or plant. If it’s strictly a cosmetic issue, we generally don’t treat chemically.
  • Recycled clippings – Instead of bagging our grass clippings after mowing, we leave them to be naturally composted into the turf, adding valuable organic matter back into the soil.
  • Recycled plastic pots
  • Recycled steel T-posts
  • Recycled landscape stone and aggregates
  • Lower-water turf varieties – buffalo, fescue, native seed mixes.
  • Sourcing from local nursery growers wherever possible
  • Natural, organic soil amendments
  • Sustainably-harvested mulch
  • Developing expertise and experience in green roofs, rain gardens, stormwater BMPs, and other sustainable landscaping methods.
  • Environmental design – In our design work, we specify water-saving, drought-tolerant plant varieties. For example, unless specifically specified, we never use shrub varieties requiring bed irrigation, instead designing irrigation systems to maximize water use and efficiency and selecting native plant material.
  • Irrigation Technology – We use smart controllers and rain sensors to minimize water waste. When tree irrigation is required, for example in urban plantings, we use drip irrigation, which is most efficient and environmentally conscious.
  • Biological Controls – We use biological controls over chemicals wherever possible, for example dormant oils instead of pesticides.
  • Company facilities management that minimizes energy usage
  • Preparing conversions to lower-emission power equipment and more fuel-efficient vehicles
