It will be a few months before things start warming up in our region. This means that protecting your landscaping from winter weather is something that you should still be actively doing; especially in regard to protecting it from all the salt that’s blowing around.

The first thing you should do is cut back on your use of salt when possible. This is the easiest way to keep it from blowing into your landscaping. You should use a deicer only when absolutely necessary to prevent slips and falls.

When you do need to use a deicer, be mindful of keeping the rock salt away from your grass and other plants, as it is very harmful to your landscape. Another great option is to use magnesium chloride, which you can also mix it with substances such as sawdust or kitty litter to make it more effective at preventing slips and spills, and the material won’t harm plants as it is washed away. Finally, don’t pile shoveled snow on top of landscaping in order to help prevent buildup within the soil.

We encourage you to contact Hermes Landscaping for more information about protecting landscaping from winter weather. We’ll be happy to give you more suggestions and ideas for you to take advantage of.
